Dr. Dorothy Nyambi's 25+ years career in the international and entrepreneurial sectors is informed by her unique life experiences working on the ground in developing countries (long-term development and humanitarian),
with a lifelong focus to ensure women and girls are not left behind. Bilingual in English and French, with a tested C-suite experience across CEO, COO, Executive Team and organizational phases of start-up, rapid growth, crisis and turnaround, Dorothy's professional experience includes strengthening business processes and mobilizing funding in support of grassroots movements, community impact, and diversity in Africa, North America, Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America & Caribbean, and the Middle East.
Passionate about Gender Equality and inclusion, Dorothy has been a leader and founding member of Gender Summit Africa (Cape Town 2015 and Kigali 2018); member of AWID for the past 15 years; Member of the Board Room Africa focused on mentoring and getting young African women into governance roles across the continent though selection, training and mentoring; and board director with the Kigali Collaborative Research Centre (KCRC) under the Carnegie Mellon University Africa. Born in Cameroon (West Africa), Dorothy and her family moved to Canada 16 years ago where she lives with her Husband David (Electrical Engineer) and their three adult children.

Laura Mae Lindo, Member of Provincial Parliament for Kitchener Centre, is a respected activist and educator who holds both a Masters and PhD in Education. Her commitment to building inclusive communities both within and outside of educational environments is grounded in her knowledge of how to put anti-oppression theories into practice. Laura Mae is a knowledgeable advocate for the rights of women and girls, a respected ally to marginalized community members, and, most importantly, a courageous public speaker on issues often left unaddressed in the mainstream. Laura Mae is the Official Opposition Critic for Anti-Racism, and Citizenship and Immigration. The Leader of the Official Opposition recently appointed her as Chair of Official Opposition’s first Black Caucus, to collaborate with Black communities and allies to address systemic anti-Black racism in Ontario.

Women have made important contributions in all areas of science and technology. Yet the proportion of women in many areas of science and engineering, including physics, remains low. What can we do to build an inclusive science community I'll discuss the data on the current status of women in science. Where do we stand today and what can we improve?

Shohini Ghose is a Professor of physics and computer science at Wilfrid Laurier University. She examines how the laws of quantum physics can be harnessed to transform computing and communication and for novel tasks such as teleportation. She also supports and celebrates women scientists as the founding Director of the Laurier Centre for Women in Science. She has co-authored Canada’s bestselling introductory astronomy textbook and her videos on science have received millions of views worldwide. Dr. Ghose is the recipient of several awards including a TED Senior Fellowship in 2018. In 2019, she was among 25 women scientists featured in a UNESCO exhibit in Paris. She is a Researcher at the Perimeter Institute, an Affiliate of the Institute for Quantum Computing, and a Fellow of the Balsillie School of International Affairs. In 2017, she was named to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Dr. Ghose is working to create a vibrant and inclusive physics community in Canada as the President of the Canadian Association of Physicists.

Waterloo Region in the Post-#MeToo Era
The #MeToo Movement was a watershed moment in the advancement of gender equality, giving a powerful platform to women and demonstrating the extent of sexual assault and harassment across society.
For 30 years, the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region has been supporting survivors and advocating for social change. In recent years, with increased public dialogue on the topic, community-based Sexual Assault Support Centres have seen exponential increases in the demands for their services.
It’s encouraging that more women who have experienced sexual violence are coming forward, but the Movement has also revealed how much change is still needed to create an equitable society and address the root causes of sexual violence.
Sara will talk about the Movement from a broad perspective, how it manifests locally, and what business and professional women need to know to ensure lasting change.

We will come together to participate in a special tribute to one of the world’s most influential organizations, the International Federation of Business and Professional Women, which unites women around the world. Although its members speak in many languages and live in countries with differing traditions they will share the same determination of purpose. More than 80 years ago, BPW was founded by Dr. Lena Madesin Phillips from the United States of America and a few years later she conceived the idea of the Candle Lighting Ceremony. As we perform this ceremony, we will evoke historical memories, the many accomplishments and celebrate today’s achievements.
With this Candle Lighting Ceremony, we will be celebrating the accomplishments of our members. By lighting each candle, we will pledge our support to their advocacy and efforts for a better life not only in the more than 100 countries where we will all be represented, but throughout the whole world. Together, we can make a difference!

Reinventing the future – one voice at a time
n January 28 we are so excited to welcome Dawna Bate.
Dawna Bate spent her career in the computer field, starting when personal computers were first introduced to the public. She ran her own computer programming and training company for 12 years and has worked for large multi-national corporations, local government and small local companies. Towards the end of her corporate career, she was a data specialist, focused on supporting actuarial and accounting teams in many different capacities. Dawna took early retirement in 2016, with plans of casting off the dock lines and sailing around the world with her husband. As often happens, life had different plans and the big adventure had to be cancelled. So she adjusted her sails, discovered a different destination and between doctors’ appointments and recuperating, she’s continued to sail on Lake Ontario, is discovering her creative abilities, is an occasional blogger and is currently working on her first novel.
One of the life lessons Dawna has learned is how past voices influence current actions. Dawna will take you through the exploration of what past voices are influencing your current actions, and how to change the message those voices are sending you in order to move forward and bring more success into your life.

On November 26 we are so excited to welcome Lisa O'Connell. Read on to find out more about her:
Lisa O’Connell is the founder and Artistic Director of Pat the Dog Theatre Creation - nationally recognized as a leader in the cultivation and promotion of theatre creators and their work in Ontario since 2006. Artists working with PTD have received or been nominated for the RBC Playwright Award, the Carol Bolt Award, Governor-General’s Award (Drama), RBC Emerging Directors Award, among others.
O’Connell is a Caucus Chair at the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, and sits on the Advocacy Committee of the Playwrights Guild of Canada, She is the recipient of a Special Jury Award and the Gowlings Literary Award from Arts Awards Waterloo and has delivered the closing Keynote address at the Canadian Association of Theatre Researchers Conference. O’Connell has been published in Canadian Theatre Review, The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, among others. She divides her time between her artistic homes in Waterloo, ON and Sudbury, ON with her partner Mark Walton.
At our BPW dinner, she will be discussing: "the background to our latest award which addresses Gender Parity for Women in Theatre in Canada and why Waterloo Region has been chosen to the nexus for this National conversation. In doing so, we’ll address creative sector jobs for women, how culture is created and why this region has been identified as “awesome” for women-led theatre creation."
She'll also be sharing some backstage theatre stories about how they make the work they do.

Kelly Franklin is an award winning speaker, number one best selling author and advocate on the issue of human rights, human sex trafficking, sexual abuse and equines. She is the Executive Director and visionary of Farmtown Canada, with a
personal story of violence, drugs and incarceration that she has had success to overcome.
Founding Farmtown Canada as a registered Canadian charity in 2007. Kelly, with her family and her team have evolved into focused community work offering support as a safe haven in rural Ontario, Canada. Young girls that need prevention and intervention from human trafficking find safety, trauma treatment and learn to live in the moment with their horses that heal programs at the farm.
Recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee, Ontario Volunteer Medals, and the Canada 150 Certificate of Merit and recognition, her best accolades are still found in her family, her barn, and the lives of girls who have stories to create for their future wellness and success.

On September 24 we are so excited to welcome Marie McDermott. Read on to find out more about her:
"In June of 2007 I was at a very low point in my life. So low in fact, that the thoughts of ending my life were very real and felt merited. My entire childhood and adult life to this point had been surrounded by sexual and emotional abuse.
The negative words that had been spoken into me as a child over and over again had become that ugly voice in my head, and unfortunately my truth. The feelings of being worthless and unwanted were grounded in me like roots from a 100 year old tree. Guilt and shame covered me like a sticky substance that wouldn’t wash away, no matter what I did. My pain at that time was so real. How does a child speak up to say that someone close to them is hurting them. You don’t, you act out. The sequence of events that were about to unfold next, would land me behind bars for the next 6 months. When I look back now, as hard as it is for me, being arrested that night was a blessing, I believe it actually saved my life."

"In June of 2007 I was at a very low point in my life. So low in fact, that the thoughts of ending my life were very real and felt merited. My entire childhood and adult life to this point had been surrounded by sexual and emotional abuse.
The negative words that had been spoken into me as a child over and over again had become that ugly voice in my head, and unfortunately my truth. The feelings of being worthless and unwanted were grounded in me like roots from a 100 year old tree. Guilt and shame covered me like a sticky substance that wouldn’t wash away, no matter what I did. My pain at that time was so real. How does a child speak up to say that someone close to them is hurting them. You don’t, you act out. The sequence of events that were about to unfold next, would land me behind bars for the next 6 months. When I look back now, as hard as it is for me, being arrested that night was a blessing, I believe it actually saved my life."

BPW is SO excited to welcome back Brenda Halloran!
We had her join us last October and we just didn't get enough.
Brenda Halloran is a global leader with a local conscience. Often referred to as the people’s Mayor, Halloran successfully held the top job as the Mayor of the City of Waterloo, Canada from 2006-2014. Responsible for leading the City through one of the most dynamic and innovative periods in its history, Halloran was focused on economic development, international partnerships and smart city growth. She is a strong advocate for seniors, women and children, homeless citizens, victims of human trafficking and new Canadians.
Today, Halloran is the Chair of the Board of Startup Canada, President of the Trillium Innovation Venture Group and has her own consulting business. Brenda is highly engaged in the community and is a member of the Rotary Club of Waterloo, on the Kidsability Foundation Board, on the board of Supportive Housing of Waterloo and assists many organizations with fundraising. She believes in coaching and mentoring others and helping them achieve their highest potential. She continues to be involved in the local technology sector and works with new start-up companies.
She is an excellent and entertaining speaker. We can't wait to hear more.

Despite the tragic accident of her husband, Peter Hallman, in 1999, she found the strength and courage to persevere and carried on their dream of building a very successful business called Terraces by Hallman, She continued growing the business, and eventually owned retirement homes in Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph. Today, she is starting yet another business with her son, and will speak to us about her life through all of these events.
She is an excellent and entertaining speaker. We can't wait to hear more.

"Be the Change"
We will feature BPW's Candlelighting Ceremony, which introduces members to the heart and soul of what the BPW international family is about.
The second part for February's meeting is an action planning meeting for the politically driven resolutions that BPW clubs put together. These resolutions are solutions-oriented documents that are presented to either Provincial or National levels of Canadian government.
This workshop will be given in tandem by Elaine Mortensen, past President of BPW KW, and Dr Camille Krause, whose resolution has previously been submitted.

What is a Resolution?
Resolutions passed at a Provincial Conference or National Convention often contain directives to urge the provincial or federal governments and/or as appropriate specific ministries to take some sort of action.
Elaine Mortensen will provide more background on resolutions.
Dr Camille Krause will share what her resolution was all about - and what inspired her to write it.
Our goal is to get inspired about issues that mean the most to us, that we can work towards solutions for. Resolutions are a way to channel our energy for change.

Sara Bingham, one of two Executive Directors with Women's March Canada, got on a bus and marched in the Women's March on Washington on January 21, 2017. She is a biracial woman who grew up in northern Ontario and holds a Bachelor of Arts (psychology) from Carleton University, as well as a Bachelor of Arts (linguistics) from the University of Ottawa. Sara is a mother, therapist, entrepreneur, author and now activist.
Sara has called herself a feminist her entire life and found her place in the social justice world while studying psychology at Carleton University. One, let's call it "enlightening," semester of courses at Carleton included: psychology of women, women in modern christian traditions and psychology of black women. Sara has been a chapter leader for Lean In since 2015 and a chapter leader for Hacking Health since 2016.

Denise is an inspirational speaker, coach and the author of “The Fighter Within: Beating Life’s Challenges One Day at a Time”. She is the co-creator and co-presenter of the “You Got This! - Reclaiming your power when life knocks you down” workshops series. Denise has overcome many of her own challenges over the years which she shares both in her book and when speaking. There were some key people in her life who taught her valuable lessons and she wants to do the same to pay it forward and inspire hope in others by sharing her story. Her message of hope, gratitude and the power of positivity have made an impact on her audiences.
Denise Lowe is a retired high school teacher, with Honours Bachelor of Physical Education and Bachelor of Education Degrees. In her 23 years of teaching, Denise worked mainly with teens and in her later years she worked with at-risk youth through an Alternative Education program. She taught a wide range of topics throughout her career; exercise and nutrition, healthy relationships, social justice and spirituality to name a few.
With over 10 years of experience owning two businesses, both traditional and network marketing, Denise learned a wealth of knowledge and valuable information working in both business models and continues to grow her entrepreneurial skills as a member of both Cambridge and Hamilton Chambers of Commerce.
In her leisure, Denise enjoys playing and watching sports especially basketball, football and hockey, and she has coached both high school and regional girls’ basketball teams. She volunteers with Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and plans to do more work in spreading awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and Mental Health. Denise is married to Derryck and is a proud mom to Julia and Lysa.

What is the Canadian Coalition to Empower Women?
And why is BPW so excited about it?

Generally, the movement is about supporting equal pay for equal work for women and men.
BPW Canada spearheaded the establishment of the Canadian Coalition to Empower Women to promote collaborative partnerships between all stakeholders interested in advancing equality between women and men and girls and boys. Women’s Economic Empowerment and gender equality is an imperative to build strong economies, establish more stable and just societies and improve the quality of life for all women, men, their families in communities across our Nation.
The coalition refers to the Principles as a general framework when initiating dialogue with stakeholders about their role in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. Our work encourages all stakeholders to consider corporate commitment to the Principles when making decisions about which businesses, organizations or governments to partner with or to procure from.
Building upon the strengths of the WEPs the coalition promotes the signing of both the UN WEPS CEO Statement of Support and the signing of the CCEW Statement of support. We introduce UN Women’s empowerwomen.org as a valuable platform to share best practices and encourage collaborative partnerships across stakeholder groups to host women’s empowerment community building events.

Doris has been a Member of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women for over 20 years, holding board positions at all different levels of the organization, leading up to National President. She is a member of BPW London Club.
Doris joined BPW because it is more than a local women’s group. Through BPW she has a voice at all levels of government in Canada and is connected with women worldwide through BPW International. As an NGO with consultative status at the United Nations BPW members have the opportunity to participate in the annual meetings of the Committee on the Status of Women at the UN in New York. BPW is an equality-seeking group of women with a focus on women and men working together to make it a better world to live in.
Doris’s career has included law, real estate, and business. She is currently working as Administration Manager for Sumagen Canada Inc., a Korean holding company that is developing a vaccine for HIV/AIDS. She is also a member of the Clergy for ECKANKAR Canada.

Raised in Woodstock, Ont., Diane enrolled in civil engineering at the University of Waterloo in 1986. Upon graduation, she accepted employment with Conestoga-Rovers and Associates Ltd. Today, as a licensed professional engineer, she works as a project manager with the local architectural firm of Masri O Architects Inc.
Since 2006 Diane has been successively elected to serve the City of Waterloo citizens living in Ward 4 in the Northeast Waterloo. Diane believes in volunteering, and served the engineering profession for over 20 years including serving as the 2010-2011 president of Professional Engineers of Ontario. She is also the founding president of the Butterfly Learning Centre, a not-for-profit child-care facility located in north Waterloo.
Diane’s husband Peter Hicks is a professional engineer together they are raising two boys, two dogs, one puppy and two cats. Both of their sons are pursuing post-secondary education in engineering.

The Hon. Bardish Chagger was elected as the Member of Parliament for the riding of Waterloo on October 19th, 2015. In addition,Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed her as Minister of Small Business and Tourism on November 4th, 2015 and as Government House Leader on August 19th, 2016.
Bardish is a natural leader and organizer whose life has been devoted to inclusion and community building, driving her deep involvement in our community and the Liberal Party.
Waterloo Region is where Bardish was born, raised, and educated. Bardish obtained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Waterloo (UW), where she was also President of the UW Young Liberals.
During her time at UW, Bardish was a support worker for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities and led a team in transforming and successfully obtaining QS/ISO 9002 certification at a local Tool & Die company.
After graduation, Bardish was executive assistant to former Kitchener-Waterloo MP Andrew Telegdi from 2004 to 2008. This experience provided her with front-line exposure to the work of an MP, giving her significant insight into the daily challenges of constituents in the riding of Waterloo.
After 2009, Bardish was a community organizer at the Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre, where she helped build the Centre’s relationships with member groups and partners to maintain, expand, and strengthen their role in the community. She also worked part-time as coordinator with a new not-for-profit venture, DrinkSmart Inc., promoting responsible drinking to post-secondary students.
In addition to her community involvement, Bardish has been a member of the Liberal Party since the age of 14 and has held a number of volunteer roles within the Party, including:

She heads up Tamarack's integrated communications, database and online spaces, and constantly advocates for simplicity in infrastructure, frameworks and design. Lisa also facilitates sessions on Community Engagement and Continuous Communication to educate others in applying the principles of marketing, advertising, customer loyalty, and user experience to community initiatives.
Lisa comes to this work from Quarry Integrated Communications where she worked with clients in agribusiness, healthcare, financial services and technology. Lisa brings private sector knowledge to public sector work. Hailing from Australia, Lisa also worked on major water infrastructure projects as the liaison between Government, Engineering and the Community.
On the side, Lisa is one of ten owners of Seven Shores Community Café in Waterloo, ON, where she coordinates community events and monthly art exhibits. She is also a Trustee of the KW Awesome Foundation - a group that provides no-strings attached grants for "awesome" community-based projects.

Gender Wage Gap Strategy Steering Committee
The Gender Wage Gap Strategy Steering Committee conducted provincial consultation sessions from October 26, 2015 through February 29, 2016. It has now developed recommendations to help create a strategy aimed at closing the gender wage gap through the actions of business, government, labour and all Ontarians.
The government is committed to women’s equality in Ontario and has taken steps to strengthen women’s economic opportunities and to address barriers preventing women’s full participation in the labour force.
The development of a Gender Wage Gap Strategy will build on the progress made by this government so far in improving the economic and social situation of women in Ontario, and could significantly improve Ontario’s economic outcomes.
Linda Davis, BA
Linda Davis is the 1st Vice President of BPW Canada and past Provincial President. She sits on the Executive of the Canadian Federation of University Women London, the Ontario Provincial Council of Women and her Community Association. In addition Linda is the BPWO liaison with the Ontario Equal Pay Coalition, a group working to eliminate the gender wage gap.
Since joining BPW in 1993, Linda has been advocating towards the improvement of the status of women in all phases of society, especially in business, the professions and industry. She has attended BPW International Congresses, Regional Meetings and attended U.N. for the Status of Women meetings held yearly.
In April of 2015 Linda was appointed by Order-in-Council as an External Advisors to the Ontario Gender Wage Gap Strategy Steering Committee. Linda, and the other Steering Committee members, held consultations around the province to hear what Ontarians had to say about closing the gender wage gap in the context of the 21st Century Economy. The committee submitted their final report and recommendations to the Ontario Minister of Labour in late May of 2016.
Linda has 2 daughters and 4 grandsons. She lives in London Ontario with her partner Dave and has worked at Fanshawe College for the past 29 years. Linda has earned several College Certificates, a Diploma, and a University Degree. In addition to family, work and advocacy, Linda enjoys golf, travel and walking her two dogs (Jack & Benny).

Feminine Harbor fosters female leadership, by shedding LIGHT onto women’s narratives. Anchored by real experiences, in real relationships. Feminine Harbor is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary, and inclusive organization that aims to bring women of different generations and backgrounds together. We want to promote a sustainable and healthy dialogue about womanhood. We believe we need to have open conversations, in order to promote change. Carolina Miranda is a woman. This is an important statement because it’s one of the few things she didn’t choose to be – she was born a woman, in a world that would devalue her for that. She became a feminist almost by default, in a constant effort of self-defense while growing up in Brazil, in the 80s. It was like developing basic survival skills. She was also born a writer – something she denied for many years, but which she finally recognized later in life that it was not a choice either. She has always been attracted to myths, rhymes, and stories from a very young age and without even noticing, she specialized in female authors in a search of literature and myths that she could see herself reflected by. Some of her biggest influences are: Marion Eleanor Zimmer Bradley, Clarice Lispector, Teolinda Gersão, Elizabeth Bishop, Lya Luft, Maya Angelou, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Cheryl Strayed, Alice Munro, Alice Sebold, Anik See, Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, and Charlotte Brontë.
Feminine Harbor fosters female leadership, by shedding LIGHT onto women’s narratives. Anchored by real experiences, in real relationships. Feminine Harbor is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary, and inclusive organization that aims to bring women of different generations and backgrounds together. We want to promote a sustainable and healthy dialogue about womanhood. We believe we need to have open conversations, in order to promote change. Our goal is to foster female leadership in various sectors of society, but shedding LIGHT- Learning, Integrity, Guidance, Humanity and Trust – onto women’s voice. We are anchored by real experiences, in real relationships.

#leapfear is Anita's passion project to honour her mother who died a year ago this February. Words seemed so inadequate to describe her mom, so this is why #leapfear emerged. This is Anita's Tribute, to use her mom's voice, even in her death, to inspire us to move past our fear and to live our lives as we were meant to be.
Anita will share with us some of the stories of 29 women who have moved beyond their fears to become the people they were meant to be. Anita was humbled by their willingness to share their stories in the hope of inspiring all of us to live past our fears. Anita hopes to inspire us as much as she has been, by sharing these stories.

We will come together to participate in a special tribute to one of the world’s most influential organizations, the International Federation of Business and Professional Women, which unites women around the world. Although its members speak in many languages and live in countries with differing traditions they will share the same determination of purpose. More than 80 years ago, BPW was founded by Dr. Lena Madesin Phillips from the United States of America and a few years later she conceived the idea of the Candle Lighting Ceremony. As we perform this ceremony, we will evoke historical memories, the many accomplishments and celebrate today’s achievements.
With this Candle Lighting Ceremony, we will be celebrating the accomplishments of our members. By lighting each candle, we will pledge our support to their advocacy and efforts for a better life not only in the more than 100 countries where we will all be represented, but throughout the whole world. Together, we can make a difference!

Meaghan Coneybeare has been working and volunteering in the KW Community for over 10 years. A graduate of Humber College for events management and an extensive amount of experience in communications & community relations, Meaghan uses these skills not only in her work but in ways to give back to the community. From starting social media campaigns to raise awareness on important issues locally & globally to creating and running events to help bring in important resources for local non-profits.
Sleep Tight is a campaign that, in partnership with the Waterloo Regional Police Service, works to collect new pajamas that will be distributed to people in need in Waterloo Region. This year, we’re working with the YWCA of Kitchener-Waterloo,Victims Services Waterloo Region and the Sexual Assault Support Centre to distribute pajamas to women, children and men – a simple gesture that will provide comfort and remind someone in need that there is hope.

After receiving the diagnosis of Parkinson’s in 2003 -- Dee knew her live would change—but not in the way she expected!
Parkinson’s is a progressive, incurable neurodegenerative disease, which affects movement, balance and function of the entire body.
Dee shares how she has changed her perspective of this diagnosis from an uninvited, unwelcomed enemy into a welcomed, wise teacher with a Divine invitation for an intense journey in Self-discovery.
She offers a unique perspective in living with this disease. As a Nurse she was trained in the science of medicine and as a women living with Parkinson’s she sees the need for more of the Art of medicine and modern science.
Dee will share 6 easy ways she applies science-based spiritually into her day to maintain her mental, emotional and physical well being.

Barb Hore is currently the Vice president on the Provincial BPW Board responsible for the retention of members and providing assisance to the clubs to encourage new members to join. She visits as many clubs as possible throughout the year representing BPW Ontario and providing a much-needed link between the clubs and the Board. Being a member of the Brampton club, which is the largest club in Ontario, she is able to offer up suggestions for events and meetings that have proven to be successful in her home club.
Barb joined BPW Brampton in 2002 and within the first year was a member of the executive serving as the Recording Secretary - a great way to learn about BPW. Following this, she was 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President, President and is currently the Immediate Past President. In addition to this, for the last 9 years she has been the co-chair of the club's annual golf tournament and two euchre tournaments each year!
For the last forty years she has been an independent manufacturer's sales representative in the plastics industry travelling throughout Eastern Canada and Northeastern United States.
Barb is the mother of two grown daughters and grandmother to two beautiful grandchildren.

Ruth Klahsen owns and operates Montforte Dairy (Stratford) – Ontario’s oldest, operating artisanal cheese company. After 9 years, Monforte Dairy has grown to fill a 5,800 ft2 facility and now produces 30 different kinds of cheese, which Ruth is committed to continually improving. And she wants to give back by teaching others.
Why did Ruth become a cheesemaker? She was a chef for 25 years and needed to transition to a gentler pace. Turns out, making cheese is hard work and delivers more pressure than she could have ever imagined. It’s worth it – she loves making cheese, and contributing to the sustainable farming movement. The 20 farms Ruth deals with share her philosophy. Together, they try to make a world their great-grandchildren can live in.
Ruth Klahsen, is a fantastic woman who has built up a formidable operation over the years. She faced huge obstacles when she started up the dairy, using milk from local sheep and cowherds. The regulatory and bureaucratic hurdles in setting up a small-scale artisanal cheese operation 10 years ago were daunting, but she stuck to it and has been producing outstanding cheese that you can find in her store in Liberty Village, decent grocery stores, markets (St. Lawrence, Wychwood Barns, Brickworks) and lots of good restaurants around Ontario.

When was the last time you took the time to consider the level of authenticity in your life— both personally and professionally? When was the last time you were completely and utterly genuine and vulnerable about your thoughts, your needs, your dreams? Odds are it’s been a while since you have considered that kind of authenticity. Or maybe life has you so overwhelmed that you were starting to think that that level of authenticity wasn’t even possible.
Too often the world we live in takes us down a path of trying to replicate or meet someone else’s results, definition of success or expectations. And somewhere along the way, we lose ourselves. We forget who we really are and we stuff down and ignore what we really need. We do it in our most significant and personal relationships and this pattern can also be acted out in professional organizations.
The consequence?

STUFF In Stockings ~ Fillin' Hearts Campaign
This campaign's mission is to provide 17 charities with Christmas stockings, distributing to as many youth, seniors and adults with disabilities as possible within Waterloo Region. For those who are enduring difficult times the magical experience of opening a stocking on Christmas morning is sure to fill their hearts with joy and hope for the future.
To participate all you have to do is get a stocking and fill it with donation items (approx. $20 value). BPW KW has chosen to focus on Monica’s Place, so here are some of the items that they are looking for...
Practical items such as soothers, wipes, diaper cream, bath wash, soap, receiving blankets, changing mats, etc.
Clothing such as socks, booties, onesies, hats
Small soft toys, rattles

Waterloo Town Square.
This campaign's mission is to provide 17 charities with Christmas stockings, distributing to as many youth, seniors and adults with disabilities as possible within Waterloo Region. For those who are enduring difficult times the magical experience of opening a stocking on Christmas morning is sure to fill their hearts with joy and hope for the future.
To participate all you have to do is get a stocking and fill it with donation items (approx. $20 value). BPW KW has chosen to focus on Monica’s Place, so here are some of the items that they are looking for...

WHAT'S YOUR LIFE MESSAGE?
Laurie Goodman
Laurie Goodman of Campellville, Ontario is the photographer who created Life Messages photo shoots. In the beginning, she knew only that she wanted to work with women, beyond simply taking their picture. She asked them to come in for a free photo shoot armed with a moving message or personal quotation – something they live by or teach their children, or that defines what they’ve been through.
“It just felt right to do this,” Goodman says. “I had no idea it would explode the way it has. People started sharing their pictures and in just three months I shot more than 100 women.”
Woman after woman has come to Goodman’s quiet and comfortable loft space, settled in, and talked to her about what has led them to their life messages. They write the message in white on black paper and sign it, then Goodman takes their picture with it. The messages range from “Keep moving” to “Never stop learning” to “Follow your heart,” and are the words of women who have battled cancer or fled abusive situations, been overcome by the love of a child or found fulfilment in business.
Personally uplifting Goodman hoped that the project would encourage women to help other women. She was surprised to learn that the women found the photo shoot personally uplifting. “I started to see that the women were getting a real boost from sharing their stories with me and seeing their messages come alive in the photographs,” Goodman says. “Women have said that their lives have been changed by doing this. I think it’s because it makes you stop and think about what’s really important, write it down, and commit to it.”
Laurie will share some of these incredible women's stories and how the experience has changed her whole perception of life.

The Catherine Gitzel Story Catherine Gitzel manages an Awareness Education program that brings Holocaust Survivors into the classrooms of high schools in Waterloo Region. Through the sharing of their personal history of surviving the atrocities of the Holocaust, survivors both challenge and encourage students to learn from history so it does not get repeated. Catherine has co-lead three educational trips to historical Holocaust sites with teachers from across Canada. She works with survivors and teachers to create opportunities for learning and for putting learning into action. The past two years Catherine has co-lead a Learning Seminar on the Holocaust for adults in Waterloo Region. Catherine will share portions of Holocaust survivor testimonies and personal learnings she has gained from time with survivors with hopes that learning about the past will spur us on to being aware, caring and responsible citizens. |

My story is one that is all too familiar. At the tender age of four I experienced what no child should ever experience and that was molestation. Molestation and rape would continue for the next 12 years of my life. At the age of 16 I left home, and proceeded to live a life that consisted of stealing food & money to survive. Eventually I was caught and spent the next 6 months incarcerated for the numerous crimes I had committed. Now move ahead 29 years later to 2007, I had just turned 45 & was at a very low point in my life. Then one day I stood in front of the mirror & recalled looking at myself thinking "I don't even know who I am". It was at that very moment that I knew things had to change! My journey starts......I start to heal, finally I am getting a glimpse of who I really am. My foundation Hopeaholics is founded and my goal of making a difference in people’s lives is set. My words of Hope have been shared with schools in Boston, MA & Detroit, but within a short period of time my attention is redirected to the women at the Grand Valley Federal Prison here in Kitchener. As I walk through the electric doors of the prison, instead of feeling anxious and nervous, I have an enormous amount of peace come over me......this is where I'm supposed to be. So my journey continues as I am blessed to be able to share my message of HOPE. |

As an Internet trainer and consultant, Carol has worked with groups and individuals since 2001, when she left her position as a library technician.
